Remix (book)

Remix: Making Art and Commerce Thrive in the Hybrid Economy is Lawrence Lessig's fifth book. It is available as a free download under a Creative Commons license. It details a hypothesis about the societal effect of the Internet, and how this will affect production and consumption of popular culture.

Summary

In Remix Lawrence Lessig, a Harvard law professor and a respected voice in what he deems the "copyright wars", describes the disjuncture between the availability and relative simplicity of remix technologies and copyright law. Lessig insists that copyright law as it stands now is antiquated for digital media since every "time you use a creative work in a digital context, the technology is making a copy" (98). Thus, amateur use and appropriation of digital technology is under unprecedented control that previously extended only to professional use.

Lessig insists that knowledge and manipulation of multi-media technologies is the current generation's form of "literacy"- what reading and writing was to the previous. It is the vernacular of today. The children growing up in a world where these technologies permeate their daily life are unable to comprehend why "remixing" is illegal. Lessig insists that amateur appropriation in the digital age cannot be stopped but only 'criminalized'. Thus most corrosive outcome of this tension is that generations of children are growing up doing what they know is "illegal" and that notion has societal implications that extend far beyond copyright wars. The book is now available as a free download under one of the Creative Commons' licenses.

List of Black Books episodes

Black Books, an English sitcom television series created by Dylan Moran and Graham Linehan, premiered on 29 September 2000 on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and ended on 15 April 2004. The show spans 18 episodes over three series. The original 45 minute pilot, recorded in 1998, has not been broadcast and all other episodes were approximately 25 minutes long. Moran and Linehan decided to end the show in its third series. Moran has stated that there will be no more episodes and The Times reported the series has been "killed off".

All three series of Black Books were released on DVD in the United Kingdom in 2006. The first two series were released in North America the same year and the third series was released in 2007. A complete DVD box set with additional features, titled "The Complete Black Books" was released in 2007. A limited edition DVD box set, titled "The Definitive Collector's Edition," was released in 2010 and included additional features, a booklet of liner notes and a wine bottle opener.

Fever (Queen of Swords)

Fever is the third episode of the syndicated television series Queen of Swords airing October 21, 2000

Fever sweeps Santa Helena. Marta and Colonel Montoya fall victim and Captain Grisham takes the opportunity to let Montoya die when he acquires Dr Helm's medicine. Dr Helm realises The Queen is not as bad as she is painted.

Plot

Fever is sweeping Santa Helena and the surrounding area. One of the peasant farmers, Enrique, is tending his sick wife when Captain Grisham and his men arrive at his front door and forcibly conscript him to Colonel Montoya's depleted army. Taken to Santa Helena, Enrique is brutally treated by Captain Grisham's training regime. Tessa Alvarado, witnessing the violence, pleads for Enrique to be released but Grisham's amorous conditions is of course not acceptable. Colonel Montoya is not feeling well and is furious to learn Dr Helm has used all his medicine treating others, but is promised by the evening he will have manufactured some more. This conversation is overheard by Enrique sweeping the hall outside Montoya's office. Marta is visiting Pira but she has no effective medicine and she too is succumbing to the fever.

Fever (Starsailor song)

"Fever" is the first single by British pop band Starsailor, taken from the band's first album Love Is Here. By the time "Fever" was released the band was recording their first record.

Dog (engineering)

In engineering a dog is a tool that prevents movement or imparts movement by offering physical obstruction or engagement of some kind. It may hold another object in place by blocking it, clamping it, or otherwise obstructing its movement. Or it may couple various parts together so that they move in unison - the primary example of this being a flexible drive to mate two shafts in order to transmit torque. Some devices use dog clutches to lock together two spinning components. In a manual transmission, the dog clutches, or "dogs" lock the selected gear to the shaft it rotates on. Unless the dog is engaged, the gear will simply freewheel on the shaft.

This word usage is a metaphor derived from the idea of a dog (animal) biting and holding on, the "dog" name derived from the basic idea of how a dog jaw locks on, by the movement of the jaw, or by the presence of many teeth. In engineering the "dog" device has some special engineering work when making it – it is not a simple part to make as it is not a simple bar or pipe, and the metal used in its construction is likely to be special rather than regular steel.
